{"id":2363,"date":"2016-10-16T00:12:49","date_gmt":"2016-10-16T00:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=2363"},"modified":"2021-07-11T05:08:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-11T05:08:41","slug":"support-for-basic-mapping","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/support-for-basic-mapping\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for Basic Mapping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> provides a basic mapping function to visualize the location of both the Base Stations in its network and the connected <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-client\/\">NTRIP Clients<\/a> it is servicing.<\/p>\n<p>A new map can be invoked from many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-stream-menu-controls\/\">right-click menus<\/a> (such as the menu for each Base Station slot) or from the main menu (under <em><strong>Reports<\/strong><\/em> \u21d2\u00a0 <em><strong>Map View&#8230;<\/strong><\/em>).\u00a0 Several of the dialogs also have a map button.\u00a0 All maps are displayed in the general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-document-viewer\/\">Document Viewer<\/a> window.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the basic functions found in BNC and RTKLIB and other such tools, the ability to display your current set of mountPts on a GIS base map is added using a 3rd party base map (using the common Google Map API).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2361\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap-320x136.png\" alt=\"smmap\" width=\"710\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap-320x136.png 320w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap-50x21.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap-600x254.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/SmMap.png 819w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Map2-westCoast.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2362 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Map2-westCoast-320x556.png\" alt=\"map2-westcoast\" width=\"272\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Map2-westCoast-320x556.png 320w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Map2-westCoast-173x300.png 173w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Map2-westCoast-29x50.png 29w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Map2-westCoast.png 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/a>The position data which is used for these maps is worthy of some further explanation.<\/p>\n<p>As a rule <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> gets the position which is used for the <strong>Base Station<\/strong> data sources from <strong>three <\/strong>sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The value in the Caster Table location, a Lat-Long with 0.01 degrees (~500 meters) of precision, <em>or<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The actual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/converting-ecef-to-llh-and-back\/\">ECEF<\/a> position which is sent in the RTCM3 messages, with 0.0001 meters of precision, if the data stream is a RTCM3.x format and the stream itself is being parsed.<\/li>\n<li>A very gross location based on the IP used to connect to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ECEF based position is preferred when it can be obtained &#8211; as it is more often correct. [But we have seen errors due to incorrect data there as well]<\/p>\n<p>And <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> gets the position which is used for the <strong>NTRIP Client<\/strong> position from the <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/nmea-gga-strings-in-ntrip-clients\/\">NMEA-183 $GPGGA sentences<\/a> they send back. Not all Clients will send this data. When no other data is available the connection IP is used to provide a very gross location.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of minor things can go wrong with this that you, as the operator of a public Caster, should be aware of.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Not all Caster streams are in RTCM3.x format , in which case <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> cannot decode their inner message content details.<\/li>\n<li>Not all Caster Tables entries tell the complete truth. Some Casters have have Longitude sign wrong. Others with VRS, do not have a value and send zero. For NEARest type mountPts, the RTCM-SC104 committee recommends sending a LL value in the center of your state or coverage area. [<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> does this automatically with its own <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/nearest-mountpt-dialog\/\">NEAR<\/a> connections]<\/li>\n<li>Not all Caster Table entries provide a position, If you see Caster entry at 0,0 then suspect this.<\/li>\n<li>NTRIP Clients only report their position when sending back NMEA-183 $GPGGA sentences, otherwise only the connection IP\u00a0 that was used known.\u00a0 You can also tell your NTRIP Clients that you wish to have $GPGGA sentences by setting the &#8220;<strong>Always Accept NMEA-183<\/strong>&#8221; check box in the <em><strong>Preferences<\/strong> <\/em>dialog.<\/li>\n<li>The NMEA-183 $GPGGA sentences send by many NTRIP Clients are typically <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> accurate to RTK levels (~2cm). This needs to be determined on a <em>case by case<\/em> basis with the NTRIP agent (the actual software that the client uses) that a given device uses.<\/li>\n<li>Some NTRIP Clients will send completely off base NMEA-183 $GPGGA sentences because they are connecting for test or research\u00a0 purposes, or they know that the data they send will not make any difference when connecting the single baseline stations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At this time, the Map feature supports displaying the current <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> Base Stations, the current NTRIP Clients, those Base Stations which are used in NEAR pools (as well as the region of the NEAR pool), and Base Stations from other remote Casters.\u00a0 For Base Station two radius plots are provided to indicate expected L1 and L1\/L2 outer operational ranges.\u00a0 These maps are all provided in the context where they are needed. [For example to view the streams found on another system and it&#8217;s remote Caster Base stations, invoked the &#8220;<strong>View Map<\/strong>&#8221; button in the Relay-Remote dialog.]<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> product road map is to add further features to this basic map as time goes on.\u00a0 Please tell us what you think is wanted in this regard, as user comment largely drives the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> feature priority list. the weekly logs are also being revised to allow plotting historical connections over the past weeks or month as it now done with caster connection up times.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Client Tool Tips<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whenever the mouse is clicked on a marker, some additional information is displayed in a <em>tool tip<\/em> about that Base Station or other object.\u00a0 When the mouse is clicked on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-client\/\">NTRIP Client<\/a> this information also includes information about the last reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/nmea-gga-strings-in-ntrip-clients\/\">NMEA-183 $GGA<\/a> string as shown below.\u00a0 This is useful when debugging connections with your connected users.\u00a0 In the below you can see the user has a good HDOP, sufficient satellites, and is receiving the RTCM corrections with low latency.\u00a0 All indicative of proper rover operation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6720 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ClientMarkerToolTip.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ClientMarkerToolTip.png 368w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ClientMarkerToolTip-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ClientMarkerToolTip-50x36.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ClientMarkerToolTip-320x233.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Viewing Other Caster Networks:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When set-up in a Remote-Relay stream in a dialog, there is a button that will invoke the map and display all the mountPt entries for the Caster you are connecting to.<\/p>\n<p>To invoke:\u00a0 In the <em><strong>Relay Streams<\/strong><\/em> tab, press <strong>Add New Stream..<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 The <strong>Add New Caster Stream<\/strong> dialog will appear.\u00a0 Enter the Host URL and port number, get the current mountPts (press the button) and then press <strong>View Map<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of this use showing the regional CORS network covering Spain, which is available from <a href=\"http:\/\/monitor.use-snip.com\/?hostUrl=ergnss-ip.ign.es&amp;port=2101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ergnss-ip.ign.es:2101<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3267\" src=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es.png\" alt=\"CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es\" width=\"354\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es.png 708w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es-50x33.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CastersInSpain_ergnss_ip_ign_es-320x213.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Using the <a href=\"http:\/\/Monitor.Use-SNIP.com\">Monitor.Use-SNIP.com<\/a> tool<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The above maps are all created and drawn <em>locally<\/em> by the copy of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> operating on your desktop. The base maps are served to your machine by Google, using a secure internet connection.\u00a0 If you want to check your own machine (or another node) from &#8220;outside&#8221; your own network, we provide a tool for that need.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> provides another way to display caster maps; using its cloud based <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/Monitor.Use-SNIP.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monitor tool<\/a><\/strong>, which you can find at: <a href=\"http:\/\/Monitor.Use-SNIP.com\">monitor.use-snip.com<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 This tool allows checking\/displaying a public Caster Table by entering the URL or IP (and port number) it is at.\u00a0\u00a0 The returned Caster Table is then displayed in a table format with &#8220;<strong>MAP<\/strong>&#8221; button along the right hand side.
