{"id":293,"date":"2016-02-07T21:36:49","date_gmt":"2016-02-07T21:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=293"},"modified":"2025-12-16T22:43:40","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T22:43:40","slug":"question-can-snip-be-used-as-a-data-logger","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-can-snip-be-used-as-a-data-logger\/","title":{"rendered":"Can SNIP be used as a data logger?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Yes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> provides a comprehensive solution to archival data recording needed by the network operator or researcher.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> can be set to record the raw and\/or RTCM3 data from each type of stream.\u00a0 The files are auto-named to reflect the day and time they were started.\u00a0 New files can be automatically created at preset periods of time (you can create a new data file for each stream file every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour,2 ,4, etc. to every 24 hours).\u00a0 These files can then be compressed into ZIP files is desired.\u00a0 Files can also be sent to any remote FTP site for long term storage. Unlike some <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-caster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NTRIP Caster<\/a> designs, the file backup and transfer process does disturb users or take the system off line for a period of time.<\/p>\n<p>On any tab displaying streams, simply <em>right-click<\/em> on the desired stream and check the <em>Log Raw Data<\/em> item to start logging any given stream.<\/p>\n<p>You can control the overall file naming and storing behavior from the menu <strong>Logs<\/strong> and the\u00a0menu item <strong>Data File Setting&#8230;<\/strong>\u00a0 this will display the Log Setting dialog.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DataLoggingDialog-plain.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9295 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DataLoggingDialog-plain.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DataLoggingDialog-plain.png 420w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DataLoggingDialog-plain-203x300.png 203w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DataLoggingDialog-plain-34x50.png 34w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DataLoggingDialog-plain-320x472.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In older copies of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> the dialog is similar but does not have any native RINEX processing features:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/saving-data-into-log-files\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-683\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-683 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LogFileSavingDialog.png\" alt=\"LogFileSavingDialog\" width=\"418\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LogFileSavingDialog.png 418w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LogFileSavingDialog-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LogFileSavingDialog-50x40.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/LogFileSavingDialog-320x256.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are three typical ways that users employ this ability beyond recording their own base stations:<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Field Recording<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A common use of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> is simply as an archival data recorder.\u00a0\u00a0 When in the field on an active survey campaign, some users employ a 2nd SNIP node back at the office to record the NTRIP feed used by the field team for post-processing use.\u00a0 This allows removing any interruption in the data flow from short term cellular dropouts when in the field.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Connection Sharing<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Others use a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> node to allow more connections to an NTRIP feed when the data provider only grants one connection per user account at a time.\u00a0 This allows your entire team, regardless of its size, to connect to the data stream at will.\u00a0 At the same time, SNIP logs a complete data stream for post-processing if one of the rover devices has lost critical data.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Data Gathering before Decimation<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The US NGS provides FTP files from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngs.noaa.gov\/CORS_Map\/\">CORs data sets<\/a> which provide 1Hz observational data over 24 hour periods.\u00a0 But these files are decimated to 1\/5th\u00a0 (or 1\/15 Hz)\u00a0 after one week (and then run through TEQC to clean them further). \u00a0 On other words, 4 out of every 5 measurements are removed for long term storage.\u00a0 As a result of this, end users must be on the ball to gather up the true real time data that was available during a field campaign before it is no longer available.\u00a0 Some users use <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> simply as a fail safe means to gather all the real time data for their own private archiving. Note that not all NGS data products are available as real time streams; check with the original data provider (often a State DOT).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> saves all log files in as type *.dat regardless of the data type involved.\u00a0\u00a0 So an RTCM 3.x stream saves data in the RTCM binary format, and a CMR+ stream saves in a CMR format, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The most common operation is to convert raw RTCM observational messages (message types MT1004\/1012 or MSM types) into a RINEX file format.\u00a0 Many popular tool exist to take the raw data and provide this conversion.\u00a0 A web search for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=RTCM+to+RINEX+converter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RTCM to RINEX convertor<\/a>&#8221; will bring up several such tools.<\/p>\n<p>For more details on automating the creation of RINEX files, please see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/processing-rinex-files-from-within-snip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes.
