{"id":315,"date":"2016-02-07T22:28:26","date_gmt":"2016-02-07T22:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=315"},"modified":"2023-04-13T18:30:48","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T18:30:48","slug":"managing-user-accounts","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/managing-user-accounts\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing User Accounts, old editions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Client Management (located under the <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-caster-and-clients-tab\/\">Caster and Clients tab<\/a> on the left side) is how you control how others can connect to your <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>caster and obtain data.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span>: The creation and management of new user accounts is now handled by new dialog which is part of the general <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Rev3<\/strong><\/span> release.\u00a0 See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/adding-user-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a> for usage notes. The information below is applicable to older Rev2 releases of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Updating <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> to the most current release is easy, always free, and fast &#8211; just use the menu item <em>Help<\/em> \u21d2 <em>Check for update&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3911 alignright\" src=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ClientSideTab.png\" alt=\"ClientSideTab\" width=\"370\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ClientSideTab.png 370w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ClientSideTab-287x300.png 287w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ClientSideTab-48x50.png 48w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ClientSideTab-320x335.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can operate your caster in either an <strong>open<\/strong> mode (Anonymous access) or a <strong>closed<\/strong> mode (registered users only); each has certain advantages.<\/p>\n<h5>Open Mode<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Easy to set up (default behavior out of the the box).<\/li>\n<li>No hassles with user support issues over user\/password issues.<\/li>\n<li>But, no ability to track or restrict individual users by account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Closed Mode<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Each User will need to have a User Account account which you must create for them.<\/li>\n<li>Each User Account can simultaneously connect to your <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> Caster as many times as you allow.<\/li>\n<li>New Users require your assistance to create an account<\/li>\n<li>Ability to track or restrict individual users by account.<\/li>\n<li>If the <em><strong>Advanced User Management<\/strong><\/em> Plug-In is present, you can associate User Accounts with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/user-accounts-vs-customer-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Customer Accounts<\/a> and restrict account access and use in a wide variety of ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are using <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> for a small network such as WiFi with a short baseline on a farm, for your drone club fly-ins, or for a small survey team in the field, then using the open mode may be the easiest.\u00a0 Choose the closed mode to allow tight control.\u00a0 This mode is best used by operators with public static IP addresses (and are therefore always subject to internet attacks) or by those who do not care to share their data streams with others.<\/p>\n<p>The mode is controlled with the check box labeled <strong>Allow Anonymous access for Users<\/strong>.\u00a0 Check this box if you wish to use the open mode.\u00a0 The current mode is always displayed in the summary line for client management.<\/p>\n<p>The check box labeled <strong>Allow SNIP support team access for quality monitoring<\/strong> is used in the enterprise edition of\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> to enable 24\/7 stream monitoring. It also has value when our support staff is debugging a remote SNIP installation.\u00a0 There is no harm in unchecking it, and SCSC will not use these accounts without your express consent.<\/p>\n<h3>Check Boxes<\/h3>\n<p>On the main tab window are three check boxes that control the level of detail presented on the console log.\u00a0 Their use is as follows.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Show Connection Details<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Checking the <strong>Show Connection Details<\/strong> box (and setting the console log threshold to <em>minor<\/em>) allows seeing the text of the connection submitted by each NTRIP Client.\u00a0 This is very useful for debugging connection issues.\u00a0 Many <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> operators simply leave this checked all the time.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Show Raw Data<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Checking the <strong>Show Raw Data<\/strong> box results in <em>all data<\/em> sent by <em>all clients<\/em> being displayed on the console log.\u00a0 It is intended for short term debugging of problem client connections where you wish to see precisely what they are sending to the Caster.\u00a0 The data is displayed in both Hex and ASCII formats.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Loose NMEA $GGA<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Checking the <strong>Loose NMEA $GGA<\/strong> box instructs <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> to take additional processing steps to detect and correct <em>ill-formed<\/em> $GGA inputs.\u00a0 Bad check sums and missing line terminations are overcome as well as other common encoding mistakes.\u00a0 Check this box if you have users who cannot correctly send $GGA sentences.\u00a0 This option requires additional processing for every client sending in data+, so as a best practice it should not be checked unless needed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong>:<\/span> The creation and management of new user accounts is now handled by new dialog which is part of the general <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Rev3<\/strong><\/span> release.\u00a0 See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/adding-user-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a> for usage notes. The information below is applicable to older Rev2 releases of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Updating <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> to the most current release is easy, always free, and fast &#8211; just use the menu item <em>Help<\/em> \u21d2 <em>Check for update&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Adding New Users<\/h3>\n<p>If you elect to have a closed network, you will next want to add some users.\u00a0 This is a process you will return to every time you wish to grant access to a new party.\u00a0 Users are added in the <strong>Registered Users<\/strong> dialog shown below.\u00a0 You can reach this dialog from either the <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-caster-and-clients-tab\/\">Caster and Clients tab\u00a0<\/a> or the Menu ite<em>m <strong>Control<\/strong> and the <\/em>sub menu item <strong><em>Edit User Accounts&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1087\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1087 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog.png\" alt=\"RegisteredUsersDialog\" width=\"372\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog.png 372w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-250x300.png 250w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-42x50.png 42w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-320x384.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Add a user by pressing the <strong>Add User<\/strong> button. Modify an existing user by pressing the <strong>Edit User<\/strong> button.\u00a0 Remove an existing user with the <strong>Delete User<\/strong> button.\u00a0 A confirmation dialog will be presented to confirm the deletion.<\/p>\n<p>When adding or editing a user the <strong>Edit User<\/strong> dialog seen below is presented. Enter the user name, and the password you select. The number of connections refers to how many <em>simultaneous<\/em> connections this user can have one at one time, not how many times they can connect or for how long.\u00a0 Each user will need one connection for each stream they are using at the same time. The default value is 5 connections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1088\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1088 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser.png\" alt=\"RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser\" width=\"418\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser.png 418w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser-281x300.png 281w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser-47x50.png 47w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/RegisteredUsersDialog-EditUser-320x341.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Please keep in mind that the user string and the password string are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">both case sensitive<\/span>.\u00a0 Both of these terms must be one word (i.e. no white space is allowed), and certain characters are prohibited because they conflict with the NTRIP protocol (:;\/@#).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Hint<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 The Edit User dialog displays the passwords for your users in plain text.\u00a0 As the owner \/ operator of this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>node, there are no secrets from you.\u00a0 You will find this feature very helpful when your users contact you after having forgotten the password they loaded into some field device months ago which they can no longer recall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0 User Names, passwords, and mountPt names are all case-sensitive strings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Viewing and Tracking Connected Users<\/h3>\n<p>On the <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-caster-and-clients-tab\/\">Caster and Clients tab &#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the summary line for client management is a count of how many client are currently connected.\u00a0 This is also shown in the status bar at the bottom of the application window.\u00a0 A count of how many client connections have occurred since the Caster was started is also displayed in the tab.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>List Current Users&#8230;<\/strong> button provides a detailed report to the console regarding how many <strong><em>users<\/em><\/strong> are currently connected to the Caster.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>List Recent IPs&#8230;<\/strong> button provides a more report to the console regarding how many <strong><em>IPs<\/em><\/strong> currently connected to the Caster.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these buttons provide different details such as how many times a given user has logged on, how much data they have consumed,\u00a0 what NTRIP Client software they are using, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Hint<\/strong><\/span>: When new users are unable to connect to your caster (the most commonly reported issue when operating any model of NTRIP Caster), go to this tab and check the check box &#8220;<strong>Display New User Connection Details<\/strong>&#8221; and watch your users attempt to connect. This usually the best way to quickly determine what is wrong.\u00a0 Many deployments leave this checked all the time.<\/p>\n<p>The general topic of viewing connected users is covered further in <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/viewing-connected-users\/\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Tracking Abusive Users<\/h3>\n<p>On the <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-caster-and-clients-tab\/\">Caster and Clients tab &#8230;<\/a>\u00a0 is a small button marked &#8220;<strong>B<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 (for Banned) which provide a summary of any IP addresses which have connected to your Caster many times without every succeeding.\u00a0 You can read more about the threshold controls to manage such users in <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/banning-abusive-users-simple\/\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Client Management (located under the Caster and Clients tab on the left side) is how you control how others can connect to your SNIP caster and obtain data.
