{"id":3791,"date":"2024-07-25T00:05:26","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T00:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=3791"},"modified":"2024-07-26T14:06:27","modified_gmt":"2024-07-26T14:06:27","slug":"banning-abusive-users-editing","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/banning-abusive-users-editing\/","title":{"rendered":"Banning Abusive Users, Editing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article reviews some of the various <strong>advanced<\/strong> controls and settings used by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> to ban abusive users.\u00a0 This feature allows you to detect and to block connecting users (remote IPs) who fail to connect to your <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> Caster node repetitively for long periods of time without success.\u00a0 We call these &#8220;<em>abusive IP connections<\/em>&#8221; although the root cause is often simply an ill-configured NTRIP Client attempting to connect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Note<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0 In prior releases of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>, the ability to manage and block IPs after exceeding the thresholds which you have set was not available on the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong><\/em><\/span> model of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Now, all models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> have the full set of features in this area.\u00a0 For a summary see this article (link tbd) which provides a fuller discussion about the dialog.<\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>Note<\/strong><\/em><\/span>:\u00a0 This is the <strong>advanced<\/strong> article which deals with editing the blocked list; please be sure to read the <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/banning-abusive-users-simple\/\"><strong>simple<\/strong> <\/a>article for the basics of how this control is used. (or better yet, the newer article found here &lt;-link tbd)<\/p>\n<p>This dialog allows blocking an IP forever from accessing <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> and selecting a much longer temporary ban periods.\u00a0 Motivations for doing this will vary, including legitimate internet attackers, but it should be considered an extreme measure.<\/p>\n<p>A typical\u00a0 banned dialog looks like the below whenever there blocked\/bannedIPs.\u00a0 It should be noted that this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> Caster has been set be very low threshold values.\u00a0 This image also shows a mixture of temporary banned IPs (denoted with (<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>T<\/strong><\/span>)) and <em>permanently<\/em> banned ones (shown with (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>P<\/strong><\/span>)).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_ShortTimes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3784 size-full\" src=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_ShortTimes.png\" alt=\"Ban_ShortTimes\" width=\"498\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_ShortTimes.png 498w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_ShortTimes-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_ShortTimes-50x34.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_ShortTimes-320x219.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The various basic controls shown here are all discussed in <a href=\"\/kb\/knowledge-base\/banning-abusive-users-simple\/\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article we consider how to <strong>Add<\/strong>, <strong>Edit<\/strong>, or <strong>Remove<\/strong> a specific IP entry using the <em><strong>Edit&#8230;<\/strong><\/em> button.<\/p>\n<p>This is done with a set of nested dialogs which appear over the basic IP Ban Settings Dialog as shown below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditingWithData.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3786 size-full\" src=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditingWithData.png\" alt=\"Ban_EditingWithData\" width=\"494\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditingWithData.png 494w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditingWithData-300x283.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditingWithData-50x47.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditingWithData-320x302.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The Edit&#8230; Button<\/h3>\n<p>When pressed this button displayed a list of currently banned IPs which can be further edited.\u00a0\u00a0 This button is disabled in the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong><\/em><\/span> and\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em><strong>Basic<\/strong><\/em><\/span> models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 When pressed, a list of the current IPs is presented showing the point of time in the future when their banned periods will lapse. IPs which are <em>permanently<\/em> banned are denoted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ban_EditList.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter period.<\/p>\n<p>If the <em><strong>Add&#8230;<\/strong><\/em> button was pressed, the IP value may be entered as well as the time period.<\/p>\n<h4>IP Values:<\/h4>\n<p>Enter the IP in the normal format of: x.x.x.x\u00a0\u00a0 Leading zeros are not required.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to block the entire sub net (the final digit for 256 nearby IPs) enter the value in the form: x.x.x.*<\/p>\n<h4>Time Values:<\/h4>\n<p>The time period is measured from the current time and the drop down allows selecting from a range of values spanning from minutes to several weeks.\u00a0 If the Permanent button is
