{"id":4868,"date":"2024-12-07T01:51:42","date_gmt":"2024-12-07T01:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=4868"},"modified":"2024-12-07T19:23:20","modified_gmt":"2024-12-07T19:23:20","slug":"pfat-filter-settings-and-uses","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/pfat-filter-settings-and-uses\/","title":{"rendered":"PFAT: Filter Settings and Uses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/introducing-pfat\/\">PFAT features<\/a> are available in the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Pro<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Basic<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, editions of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>copies of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> share the same code base, but many of these innovative features are disabled in the freely available <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>edition.<\/p>\n<h3>Using the PFAT <strong>Filter<\/strong> Dialog Control<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4910 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/PFAT_Filter_norm.ico\" alt=\"\" width=\"64\" height=\"64\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_menu.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_menu.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_menu.png 305w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_menu-300x130.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_menu-50x22.png 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>The PFAT Filter control is used to <strong>remove<\/strong> selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/rtcm-3-message-list\/\">RTCM3 message types<\/a> from any Base Station data stream.\u00a0 When a message type is listed in the Filter, it is simply not forwarded on to any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-client\/\">NTRIP Clients<\/a> or to other users in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> (such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-pushed-out-streams-tab-output-data\/\">PUSH_Out<\/a> stream).\u00a0 The message type is still parsed and may be used in various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/graphical-monitoring\/\">navigation<\/a> and monitoring services.\u00a0 When PFAT Filtering is active, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-stream-menu-controls\/\">right-click menu<\/a> for the stream shows a check mark. Selecting the menu item displays the dialog box. The message stream must be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/pfat-parse-settings\/\">Parsed<\/a> in order to Filter the messages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_tooltip.com_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_tooltip.com_-320x189.png?_t=1517411474\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_tooltip.com_-320x189.png 320w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_tooltip.com_-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_tooltip.com_-50x30.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_tooltip.com_.png 557w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a>Any RTCM3 message type may be removed by Filtering.\u00a0 However, removing some message types can result in the need to adjust the content of other messages.\u00a0\u00a0 This adjustment (when needed) is covered in the <em><strong>Translate<\/strong> <\/em>step of the PFAT process.\u00a0 The list of message types to be filtered is saved in the setting file.\u00a0 When a stream is restarted (such as during the power up stage), any current active message filter for that stream is listed with the normal status information.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>Hint<\/strong><\/em><\/span>: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/base-station-details\/\">station details<\/a> (at right) provided in the stream tool tip is a quick way to show if any PFAT Filtering is active for the stream.<\/p>\n<p>A typical Filter Dialog is shown below.<br \/>\nA detailed review of the Filter controls settings can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/pfat-filter-dialog-controls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/FilterDialog_r3-17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9204 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/FilterDialog_r3-17.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/FilterDialog_r3-17.png 390w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/FilterDialog_r3-17-167x300.png 167w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/FilterDialog_r3-17-28x50.png 28w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/FilterDialog_r3-17-320x574.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a broad statement, it is best to avoid the need to filter messages by ensuring that only the messages desired are sent by the Base Station in the first place.\u00a0 This also conserves communication bandwidth.\u00a0 Often the ideal set of messages is not possible due to an inability to control that data source, or from diverse needs among the different end users. Filtering allows an easy method to create derivative data stream specifically to meet the needs of your NTRIP Client users.<\/p>\n<h3>Typical Uses Cases for Message Filtering<\/h3>\n<p>Common uses of the PFAT Filter are described further in the examples below.<\/p>\n<h4>Removing Orbital Data<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_Orbits.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4884 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_Orbits.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_Orbits.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_Orbits-191x300.png 191w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_Orbits-32x50.png 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Some Base Station devices provide <em>Broadcast <\/em><span class=\"st\"><em>ephemeris messages<\/em> as a part of their message stream (most do not).\u00a0 Others will provide a single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/determining-if-a-stream-contains-orbital-ephemeris-data\/\">broadcast ephemeris<\/a> message when each new SV is first tracked above the local horizon.\u00a0 To some operators this represents excess message baggage that is best removed.\u00a0 Other operators may not want to use raw broadcast ephemeris messages, preferring other sources.\u00a0 Still other operators prefer to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/orbit-and-clock-corrections-feeds\/\">RTCM3EPH<\/a> stream for all <\/span>ephemeris messages.\u00a0 The removal of any ephemeris message is easily achiev<span class=\"st\">ed using Filter settings like those show below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Removing Observations for a GNSS type<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_GLOremove.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4881 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_GLOremove.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_GLOremove.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_GLOremove-273x300.png 273w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_Filter_GLOremove-45x50.png 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Most Base Stations deployed today provide L1\/L2 data about both GPS and GLO type GNSS systems.\u00a0 Other systems, and other signals, are also being deployed as the availability different GNSS signals continues to grow.\u00a0 But if you happen to have a older GNSS rover device that cannot use such data, these innovations are\u00a0 wasted bandwidth from your perspective.\u00a0\u00a0 By using Filtering, a stream can be created that provides only the messages that are desired.\u00a0 The most common use of this is to remove GLONASS data from a GPS+GLO stream, leaving only the GPS data messages to be sent out (and again, at a reduced use of client bandwidth).<\/p>\n<p>Note that in this example, the remaining GPS observational messages (MT 1004) must also be adjusted with the <em><strong>Translate<\/strong> <\/em>ability of PFAT to indicate to the rover devices in the field that MT 1004s (and not the MT 1013, the GLO observation messages) are now the last messages in a common measurement epoch.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>handles this for you.<\/p>\n<h4>Removing &#8220;Clutter&#8221; Messages<a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_clutter.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_clutter.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_clutter.png 299w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_clutter-249x300.png 249w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pfat_filter_clutter-42x50.png 42w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Some Base Stations contain messages that simply are not wanted or needed by the end user community.\u00a0 As an example:\u00a0 in the seismically active southern California region there are many Base Stations that transmit Plate Boundary Observation (PBO) messages every 10 seconds.\u00a0 These are constructed using a private message type (MT 4094 assigned to Trimble).
