{"id":5239,"date":"2018-04-08T21:17:27","date_gmt":"2018-04-08T21:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=5239"},"modified":"2020-07-26T23:38:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-26T23:38:32","slug":"blank-screens-with-maps","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/blank-screens-with-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"Blank Screens with Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Problems with Blank screens when displaying maps<\/h2>\n<p>We have had recent reports (March and April of 2018) of a blank screen being displayed when a Google base map is used in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 These issues seem to be limited to those who are running <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> in a remote <strong>virtual<\/strong> Windows machine (remote desktop) and connecting to it using either <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamviewer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TeamViewer<\/a> <\/strong>or Microsoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remote_Desktop_Protocol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Remote Desktop Protocol<\/b> (<b>RDP<\/b>)<\/a> to the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>node.\u00a0 We have had no reports of similar events from any Ubuntu users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Windows Server 2012<\/strong> Deployments<br \/>\nPlease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/5715\/\">see this article<\/a> for details on how to overcome this.<\/p>\n<p>The typical user, when connected by a remote connection, sees a black screen image for the high-resolution content of the maps as shown in the image at right (click to enlarge).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen.png 750w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen-300x292.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen-600x584.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blankScreen-320x311.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a>The root cause of this issue seems to be related to problems with the way the high resolution graphics display drivers are handled between the remote machine (the host for <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">SNIP<\/span><\/strong>), the user&#8217;s local PC, and the connection software used.\u00a0 It also appears that implementation of nvidia drivers between these devices is a related cause.\u00a0 This does not appear to be a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> issue, nor an issue which is related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.qt.io\/qt-5.10\/qtwebengine-index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QtWebEngine<\/a>, which is the underlying code used to display maps in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Both TeamViewer and Microsoft have issued a number of patches over the past month to address this issue.\u00a0 At this time it does not appear a definitive &#8220;cure&#8221; has been implemented.\u00a0\u00a0 It is not known if this issue affects other 3rd party remote connection software.<\/p>\n<p>This article addresses some workaround methods that can be used until the connection software vendors work things out.<\/p>\n<h2>Advice<\/h2>\n<p>You can confirm that the issue does not affect your machine if you can see a google map displayed by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 Simply select any of the mapping functions (such as menu command <strong><em>Reports -&gt; Map View &#8230;<\/em><\/strong>) and confirm that any map is displayed.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that this issue is only present with remote connections to a host machine.\u00a0 It appears that remote <strong>virtual<\/strong> Windows machines are most often affected by this.<\/p>\n<h3>Testing SNIP<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5246\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart.png 750w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart-300x290.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart-50x48.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart-600x580.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-NavChart-320x309.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>You can confirm that basic graphical displays of charts and other vector line art work by running a navigation filter on any stream on the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> machine. [Recall also that to run a navigation filter, the RTCM3EPH stream also must be present to provide orbital data.]<\/p>\n<p>If you observe any of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/basic-navigation-chart-types\/\">navigation charts<\/a> being drawn (even if there is no data present), then <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> is working and able to render images.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Testing Mapping<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen.png 748w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-50x48.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-600x582.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/non-blankScreen-320x310.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>The menu item: <strong><em>Reports -&gt;
