{"id":5737,"date":"2021-04-03T00:00:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-03T00:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=5737"},"modified":"2021-09-02T21:13:13","modified_gmt":"2021-09-02T21:13:13","slug":"backing-up-your-snip-deployment","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/backing-up-your-snip-deployment\/","title":{"rendered":"Backing up your SNIP deployment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article provides instructions to completely Back-Up all critical settings and logs used by the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> NTRIP Caster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">From <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> Rev <strong>3.01<\/strong> onward all models (even <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong><\/em><\/span>) now provide a built-in <em>one click<\/em> Back-Up service.\u00a0 Click the menu item <strong><em>Misc<\/em> \u21d2 <em>Back-Up Settings<\/em> \u21d2 <em>Back-Up Now<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 and a ZIP file with all the below key files will be created for you.\u00a0 Use this feature to create a Back-Up on demand.\u00a0 There is also <strong>Back-Up Services<\/strong> <em>Plug-In<\/em> that creates periodic and automatic Back-Ups at the rate you select.\u00a0 The resulting ZIP files can be sent off-site by way of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/sending-email-from-snip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eMail<\/a>, FTP transfer, or to you own private secure cloud service storage.\u00a0 See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/downloads\/back-up-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Back-Up Services Plug-In<\/a> for purchase details.<\/p>\n<h3><b>To make a complete backup of all settings<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>There are <strong>ten <\/strong>key &#8216;settings&#8217; files you should back up periodically in order to save every settings and usage detail, plus of course all the log files that are created every day\/week.<\/p>\n<p>The key setting files are as follows, and their default install paths are also shown<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>C:\\Users\\&lt;UserName&gt;\\AppData\\Roaming\\SCSC\\<b>simpleNTRIP.ini<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds all the various setting used by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>; note that it is placed in a &#8216;hidden&#8217; folder based on the user name. [You can make such folders visible on your machine with the <em>View<\/em> tab of the <em>Folders and Search Options<\/em> dialog,]<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\<b>license.dat<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds the encoded license file which is node locked to the machine.\u00a0 It is used to enable various <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> features.\u00a0 This file is decommissioned and recreated when the license is moved to another machine.\u00a0 It can only be used on the machine for which it was created.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\<b>reservations<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds all the various setting used for PUSH_In reservations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-server\/\">NTRIP Servers<\/a>), and is often updated when running to reflect current usage details.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\<b>FileList.ini<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds a list of data files created by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> and their status, such as if they are to be compressed and\/or have been transferred to a remote machine using FTP. The files listed are mostly the data logs from Base Stations you are recording, but also include the Back-Up ZIP files is they are being transfers by FTP.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\<b>NtripUserAccounts.ini<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds the list of all <strong>users<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-client\/\">NTRIP Client<\/a> accounts) who have user accounts created for the Caster. All the user <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/user-accounts-adding-restrictions\/\">restrictions<\/a> and any final time of use restrictions are kept in this file.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\<b>\u00a0NtripCustomerAccounts.ini<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds the list of all <strong>customer<\/strong> accounts who &#8216;own&#8217; the user accounts on the Caster. Contact details (phone, email, etc.), as well as billing details are kept in this file.\u00a0 [For a summary of the key differences between users and customers, please see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/user-accounts-vs-customer-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a>.]<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\<b>RunCounts.dat<br \/>\n<\/b>This file holds various current and historical logging counts for your machine covering periods from the past few hours to several years of operation.\u00a0 It is updated often and is used in various system wide charts and reports.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\data\\<strong>Console_YYMMDD_00.cvs<br \/>\n<\/strong>This file holds the console log for the date given in the file name, see below for further details.\u00a0 If you have selected another path to save these files, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> will retrieve it when making a Back-Up.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\data\\<strong>WklyConnections_YYMMDD_00.cvs<br \/>\n<\/strong>This file holds a summary of the Caster the connection events for the date given in the file name, see below for further details.\u00a0 If you have selected another path to save these files, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> will retrieve it when making a Back-Up.<\/li>\n<li>C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\data\\<strong>AVL_log_YYMMDD_00.cvs<br \/>\n<\/strong>This file holds a summary of all users (NTRIP Clients) reported NMEA $GGA locations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-avl-tab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AVL tab<\/a> for the date given in the file name, see below for further details.\u00a0 It will only be present if you are recording an AVL log file.\u00a0 If you have selected another path to save these files, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> will retrieve it when making a Back-Up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note that not all of these files will exist on every <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> deployment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These files allow the complete restoration a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">SNIP<\/span> Caster to a prior state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please do not try to edit these files by hand, as it is easy to damage them and there are a few hidden consistency tests to avoid abuse.<\/p>\n<h3>To Make a backup of Event Logs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> keeps connection event logs on a <em>daily<\/em> and <em>weekly<\/em> basis. These files are kept alongside the raw base station data files.\u00a0 The Back-Up service will capture these files as well.\u00a0 Typically the prior <strong>two<\/strong> such files are captured in the Back-Up process.<\/p>\n<p>The data streams from Base Stations and the running log of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> events are placed in the <strong>\/data<\/strong> folder.\u00a0 This folder is wherever you elect put it.\u00a0 Use the menu <b>Misc\u00a0<\/b>\u21d2 <b>Data File Settings&#8230;<\/b>\u00a0 to display the dialog and the current path.\u00a0 Note that this is also the dialog that sets the remote FTP location to be used.<\/p>\n<p>Because the file collection can become very large, it is typically not backed up but is stored on a separate hard drive with large capacity.\u00a0 The default location is: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\SNIP\\SNIP\\bin\\data\\\u00a0\u00a0 You may receive periodic console &#8216;nag&#8217; messages urging you to clean up this folder when its size and contents become large.\u00a0 As a general best practice, keep the folder contents under a few thousand files.<\/p>\n<p>Within this folder are also found the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> event logs.\u00a0\u00a0 The raw data logs from any Base Station mountPt are here as well as the daily and weekly connection logs in a folder within the data folder marked <b>\/SNIPlogs<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The event log file names use the following three formats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Console_YYMMDD_00.cvs<\/strong> or Console_YYMMDD_12.cvs<br \/>\nThese files (a new file every 12 hours) hold connection and periodic log events for Clients and Data Streams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AVL_log_YYMMDD_00.csv<\/strong>\u00a0 or AVL_log_YYMMDD_12.csv<br \/>\nThese files (a new file every 12 hours) hold NMEA-183 $GGA data used for AVL tracking of connected users.\u00a0 These files may not be present on all models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>WklyConnections_YY_WK.csv<\/strong><br \/>\nThese files (one per week) hold connection event summaries for Clients and Data Streams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because these are simple comma separated value files (CSV), they can be opened and read by many 3rd party programs such as Excel or Notepad.<\/p>\n<p>Where the current data is striped into the file name using this format:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>YY\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 The current year,\u00a0 example: 2018 = 18<\/li>\n<li>MM\u00a0 &#8211; The current Month,\u00a0 example: January\u00a0 = 01<\/li>\n<li>DD\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 The current Day of the month,\u00a0 example: 01~31<\/li>\n<li>WK\u00a0 &#8211; The current week of the year, as used in GPS time numbering, example: 01~52<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The data in the log file is used to produce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/misc-caster-stream-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Base Station reports<\/a> and charts on one or more prior week operational states, such as the one shown below. The number of prior weeks that can be plotted ranges from one to over 3 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5741 size-post-mid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot-600x222.png?_t=1540934966\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot-600x222.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot-768x284.png 768w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot-50x19.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot-320x119.png 320w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/WeeklyPlot.png 810w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><em>Aside<\/em><\/strong><\/span>: The data kept in the file <b>RunCounts.dat<\/b> overlaps and compliments the above weekly log data files.\u00a0 The run counts file in in an ASCII CSV format, but should not be edited.\u00a0 While the above daily and weekly logs provide a detailed <em>event by event<\/em> summary style; the run counts file provides various summary <em>counts<\/em> of key event types occurring over a defined period of time (e.g. the number of new user connections over 5 minute period shown for the past 72 hours).\u00a0 The event log files are written out periodically as they occur, changing to a new file name when needed. The RunCounts.dat file is updated and kept in memory, only being fully written out every few hours.\u00a0 Only the single file is used for all data.<\/p>\n<p>The data in the run counts file is used to produce a number of different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/systems-logs-syslogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">System-wide reports<\/a> and charts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Safety Backup<\/h3>\n<p>There is also a <em>user safety<\/em> feature that if a copy of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> starts up and cannot find the\u00a0license.dat file AND it also sees an existing simpleNTRIP.ini file with contents, it will make a <strong>backup copy<\/strong> of that file before going into the &#8220;Evaluation&#8221; mode (its normal behavior when no license is found).<\/p>\n<p>This can occur when the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> program has been moved to a new location on the host machine.\u00a0 Some operators prefer to install upgrade revisions of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> each into its own folder. If they failed to copy the above files into this folder, before stating the new copy of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>, content in the simpleNTRIP.ini file could be reduced when <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> presumed it was an evaluation use.\u00a0 This logic prevents such a loss.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>In the Event of a machine failure:<\/h3>\n<p>You can transfer the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> license file to another machine by UN-installing the current license and key and moving that key to the new machine.\u00a0 If the machine is destroyed, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> support staff can invalidate the old key to prevent abuse and provide you with another key to create a new license.<\/p>\n<p>See this link:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"m_-2342048793344440022moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/moving-your-snip-installation-to-another-machine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/moving-your-snip-installation-to-another-machine\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you initially downloaded and\/or purchased\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">SNIP<\/span><\/strong>, a user account was also created for you, using the email you downloaded with.\u00a0 This can be used to re-download <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>, to see your download and installation histories, and to recover your purchased keys.
