When you set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-caster\/\">NTRIP Caster<\/a> on a host machine, you must enter the network IP that <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> will listen on and reply to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-client\/\">NTRIP Clients<\/a> (Rovers) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-server\/\">NTRIP Servers<\/a> (Bases) connection requests on.\u00a0 Often the network IP value that the host machine uses is not the same as the public internet network IP (or DNS\/URL name) that other parties use to reach your caster.\u00a0 These values are all set in this dialog.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8610 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog-300x181.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog-50x30.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog-600x361.png 600w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog-320x193.png 320w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/FindIPmapDialog.png 603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Often a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>NTRIP Caster is run on a machine which does not have a static IP address assigned to it.\u00a0 This article reviews three ways to set the link address used in various reports created by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 If your copy of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>operates behind a firewall, or is using Dynamic DNS (DDNS), or uses a router or DSL modem to connect to the internet, or has a DNS entry rather than just an IP address\u00a0 &#8211; then use this dialog to map the public IPs values seen by various public reports in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Basics<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>IP Mapping Setup<\/strong> dialog is reached by pressing the <strong>IP Map<\/strong> button found on the <em><strong>Caster and Clients<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-caster-and-clients-tab\/\">tab<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 The dialog (shown below with representative values &#8211; yours will differ) presents a choice of three editable values which will be used by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> in the links found with various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/article-categories\/reports\/\">reports<\/a> such as the general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/status-button-report\/\">STATUS<\/a> command.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8607 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2.png?_t=1667229288\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2.png 510w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2-300x294.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2-60x60.png 60w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapRev2-320x314.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If your <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> NTRIP Caster uses a static IP then any reports will already correctly link to the caster.\u00a0 You might still wish to use the <em>Public DNS Name<\/em> option to have those reports use the URL string for your Caster, rather than its IP address.<\/p>\n<p>If your <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>NTRIP Caster uses IP and\/or port forwarding, you should use either the <em>Public DNS Name<\/em> option (if the the IP has a DNS name registered with it) or the <em>Public IP Address <\/em>option if you prefer to use IP address values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span>: If you have a <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Pro<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>or <em><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Enterprise<\/strong> <\/span><\/em>model of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> and wish to have a machine name registered using one of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> namespaces (xxx.<em>use-snip.ne<\/em>t or xxx.<em>use-snip.org<\/em> or xxx.<em>use-snip.com <\/em>or xxx<em>.use-snip.co<\/em>), please drop us a note at the normal support email.\u00a0 We reserve the right to handle any name conflicts that may arise as we see fit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span>: If you are using a commercial DDNS service such as <a href=\"http:\/\/freeddns.noip.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ddns.net<\/a> then the periodic registration and maintenance of the machine name is handled by that provider.\u00a0 Simply enter the name you have registered in the <strong>IP Mapping Setup<\/strong> dialog.<\/p>\n<p>In all cases you will also enter the local network card IP in the <em>Machine IP Addres<\/em>s field.\u00a0 This is the actual physical IP of the host machine network card.\u00a0 Many (if not most) deployments do not have a static IP but will use a local &#8216;non routable&#8217; IP with values like 192,168.x.x or 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x.\u00a0\u00a0 If you are using one of these types of values, the traffic that reaches your Caster is either local to the same network, or has been directed to your machine from outside your local network using firewall rules and port forwarding.<\/p>\n<h2>Use of the Controls<\/h2>\n<p>The selected radio button in the<strong> Public IP Mapping Format<\/strong> determines how various reports and links are created in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 Whichever value of the three choices is selected is used in the reports and links.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span>In older versions of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>(previous to Rev 3.07) there was a master on\/off control for this feature in<strong> Public IP Mapping Format<\/strong> as a checkbox.\u00a0 And you could also enter the host machine IP value directly from the Caster and Clients tab.\u00a0 This process has now been simplified so that all IP settings are handled here.\u00a0 In prior versions the ability to use various IP mapping function was limited in the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>(free) copy of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>, but this limit has now been removed.\u00a0 Now, all models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> use the same simplified controls.<\/p>\n<p>The major choice is which of the three format styles is to be used.\u00a0 The values for each choice are enabled for editing when the radio button is selected.\u00a0 Along the right side of the dialog box is a set of test buttons to allow the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> operator to confirm that other parties (on the public internet) can contact and connect to this NTRIP Caster over the public internet using those settings.<\/p>\n<p>Extensive tool tip hints are also provided and these are shown in the textual window at the bottom of the dialog. When one of the test buttons has been pressed, comments regarding what the user should expect to find are then provided (the results are shown in a separate browser window using the default browser of the machine).<\/p>\n<p>The use of the three choices is as follows. Much of this text is also repeated in the tool tips.<\/p>\n<h3>Public DNS Name<\/h3>\n<p>Select this option when either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a) You have registered a DNS name on a domain to resolve to this machine&#8217;s Static IP address, <em>or<\/em><\/li>\n<li>b) This machine (the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> machine) connects to the internet by way of a router using DDNS and you have registered a DNS name to resolve to this machine&#8217;s dynamic IP address<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Be sure any router or firewall between <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> and the internet will forward the incoming NTRIP connections on your public port (often 2101) to the machine IP and port.<\/p>\n<h3>Public IP Address<\/h3>\n<p>Select this option when this machine (the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> machine) connects to the internet by way of a router with a common IP address (enter that address here).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the router IP periodically changes (DCHP or any non-static IP value), use this option.<\/li>\n<li>If the router or this machine uses Dynamic DNS (DDNS), use this option or the one above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Be sure any router or firewall between <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> and the internet will forward the incoming NTRIP connections on your public port (often 2101) to this machine IP and port.<\/p>\n<h3>Machine IP Address<\/h3>\n<p>Select this option when this machine (the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> machine) has a Public Static IP address that is accessible by anyone on internet. Or, if <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> will only be used within your local WAN.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is the address of the network card <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> is using (in earlier releases it is the the same value found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/the-caster-and-clients-tab\/\"><em>Caster and Clients<\/em><\/a> tab)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Important<\/strong>:<\/span> You <strong>MUST<\/strong> enter a valid network card found on the host machine here, even if you do not select this as the mapping format to be used.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use &#8216;local host&#8217; (127.0.0.1) for this value. When <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> first starts, it will list all the different host machine IPs it finds to the console.\u00a0 The value you select will be listed there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Do not use this radio button when port forwarding is being used or if a router is performing NAT services to access the internet.<\/p>\n<h3>Test Buttons<\/h3>\n<p>Each of the choices also provides a <strong>Test<\/strong> button that when pressed invokes a remote NTRIP Client\u00a0 (a service maintained on <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> cloud based servers at: <a href=\"http:\/\/monitor.use-snip.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">monitor.use-snip.com<\/a>).\u00a0 The remote service uses the specific value you have entered to try to access your Caster Table.\u00a0 When this service can see your Caster, so can other parties on the public internet. And you then have confirmation that your settings are correct.<\/p>\n<h3>Secure Casters with TLS \/ SSL<\/h3>\n<p>In versions of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> from Rev 3.07 onward, this dialog also allows selecting the security certificate that will be used for secure NTRIP Caster connections.\u00a0 The <b>SSL\/TLS Secure Sockets<\/b> Plug-In is required to do this, as well as a valid security certificate (a &#8216;CERT&#8217;) and the private key with which it was signed.\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> can use either private or public CERTS, and self-signed CERTs are also fine to use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapWsecureDetails.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8605 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapWsecureDetails.png?_t=1667227962\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapWsecureDetails.png 520w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapWsecureDetails-300x288.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapWsecureDetails-50x48.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/SNIP_IPmapWsecureDetails-320x308.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Older formats<\/h3>\n<p>In versions of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> prior to Rev 3.07, this dialog contained a master on\/off button that controlled the IP mapping process.\u00a0 When off (and <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Lite<\/strong> <\/span>models <\/em><\/span>were limited to only off, as this features was disabled) only the machine host IP was used. And that value could be entered on the Caster and Clients Tab.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IPmappingSetup.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6402 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IPmappingSetup.png?_t=1667228469\" alt=\"\" width=\"565\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IPmappingSetup.png 565w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IPmappingSetup-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IPmappingSetup-50x34.png 50w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IPmappingSetup-320x218.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Multiple Casters<\/h3>\n<p>In versions of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> running multiple Casters (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/plug-ins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plug-In feature<\/a> for <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Pro<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>models), this dialog can be used for each Caster independently.<\/p>\n<p>You can also set the default name of each Caster with the <strong>Edit Caster Nickname&#8230;<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article describes how to set the IP value(s) used in SNIP.
