{"id":7746,"date":"2021-04-27T19:15:45","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T19:15:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=7746"},"modified":"2021-05-15T23:51:49","modified_gmt":"2021-05-15T23:51:49","slug":"back-up-settings","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/back-up-settings\/","title":{"rendered":"Back-Up Settings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article covers the Back-Up features used in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> to perform automatically scheduled Back-Ups of all the key logs and settings.<\/p>\n<h2>General Back-UP Features<\/h2>\n<p>All models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> can manually create a current Back-Up using the<strong> Back-Up Now<\/strong> command.\u00a0 And all models can also restore (unpack) a prior backup with the <strong>Restore a prior Back-Up<\/strong> command.\u00a0 The general use of these two commands is covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/auto-back-up-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a>.\u00a0 A summary of the various key files which are part of the Back-Up process can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/backing-up-your-snip-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>First Time Use?<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/auto-back-up-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the above, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> deployments with an active <strong>Back-Up Services<\/strong> Plug In has some additional features which are described below.\u00a0 Chief among these is the ability to schedule the Back-Up to occur at predetermined intervals, and to have the resulting ZIP file automatically sent off-site for greater disaster recovery protection.\u00a0 Details on purchasing the <strong>Back-Up Services<\/strong> Plug In can be found here.<\/p>\n<p>All of the Back-Up control can be found in the <strong>Misc<\/strong> menu, in a section marked Backup Settings. Like other <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> dialogs, tool-tips associated with each control provide further usage hints.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7745\" src=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/BackUpSettings.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/BackUpSettings.png 460w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/BackUpSettings-246x300.png 246w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/BackUpSettings-41x50.png 41w, https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/BackUpSettings-320x390.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Back-Up Run Interval<\/h3>\n<p>The combo box allows the operator to select how often the automatic Back-Up process is triggered.\u00a0 Rates include: daily, every 2nd day, 3rd day, 4th day, 5th day, 6th day, weekly, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and never.\u00a0 Selecting <em>never<\/em> disables the auto run process, but whenever a Back-Up is manually run, the current off-site transfer is still run.<\/p>\n<h3>Prior Copies<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> will manage the number of prior Back-Up ZIP files kept based on the number selected.\u00a0 Any older files in excess of the selected value will be deleted when the next Back-Up process runs.\u00a0 The number selected times the current run interval is used to display how &#8216;far back&#8217; the oldest kept Back-Up file represents.\u00a0 [The file naming pattern is described is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/auto-back-up-use\/\">this article<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<h3>Encryption Use<\/h3>\n<p>When <strong>Encrypt ZIP File<\/strong> is checked, the Back-Up ZIP files can be encrypted with the password you provide.\u00a0 The &#8220;<strong>G<\/strong>&#8221; button will generate a random password for you.\u00a0\u00a0 The entire Back-Up file (with 6~12 files inside it) is then encrypted with the password and renamed by appending &#8220;P&#8221; to its time stamped file name.\u00a0 The process used is the industry standard ZIP format.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> can unZIP these, as can any common ZIP utility tool (if the password is provided).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>CAUTION<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Keep a record of the password(s) you create.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong> <\/span>support staff cannot recover this for you.<\/p>\n<h3>eMail Settings<\/h3>\n<p>The eMail button will mail the current settings (including the any password) to the designated eMail account you enter.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a good way to document for your records when your change the password value.\u00a0 [You must have an active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/downloads\/email-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>eMail Services<\/strong> Plug-In<\/a> to use this feature]<\/p>\n<h2>Sending the ZIP file offset<\/h2>\n<p>Every time the Back-Up process is run a new ZIP file is created.\u00a0 These files are saved to wherever you have set the Data file path (see the menu <strong>Misc<\/strong> \u21d2 <strong>Data File Settings<\/strong> to set this value).<\/p>\n<p>As a best practice, these files need to be moved to some form of safe storage outside of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> host environment.\u00a0 At this time the Back-Up process provide automated two method to support this. [A 3rd remains in development]<\/p>\n<p>When the check box <strong>Enable \/ Disable Off Site Storage Methods<\/strong> is checked, then whichever of the below is checked (and setup) will be used to send the ZIP file offsite.\u00a0 Aside; you can checks multiple methods.<\/p>\n<h3>FTP Transfers<\/h3>\n<p>The Back-Up FTP process uses the same FTP transfer settings used to save Base Station logs.\u00a0 The Back-Up is enqueued and sent in the same way.\u00a0 If the FTP repository location you use for Base Station logs is itself not secure, then you should password protect the Back-Up files to prevent other from seeing various account details.<\/p>\n<h3>eMail Transfer<\/h3>\n<p>The Back-Up eMail process uses the eMail account from the active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/downloads\/email-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>eMail Services<\/strong> Plug-In<\/a>.\u00a0 The Back-Up ZIP is sent as an attachment to the eMail you have set during the setup process and long with a simple message. It is common to set the destination eMail to be the default Caster contact email, but any valid eMail may be used.<\/p>\n<h3>Secure Cloud Transfers<\/h3>\n<p>This is a pending feature still in development and which is is not at this time released for use.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article covers the Back-Up features used in SNIP to perform automatically scheduled Back-Ups of all the key logs and settings.
