{"id":8158,"date":"2022-05-30T19:23:41","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T19:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=8158"},"modified":"2022-06-14T20:38:27","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T20:38:27","slug":"which-model","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/which-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Which Model?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article seeks to answer the FAQ &#8220;which model of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP\u00ae<\/strong><\/span> is right for my needs&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-caster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NTRIP Caster<\/a> comes in<strong> three<\/strong> basic configurations,\u00a0 the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Basic<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Pro<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>models.\u00a0 An <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Evaluation<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model is also provided to allow new users to test out more of the advanced features <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> provides.\u00a0 In the past an <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Enterprise<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model was also advertised (this was used only for unique co-development projects with other GNSS industry firms).\u00a0 Today, any set of features one may need can be obtained with the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model and various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/plug-ins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Plug-In<\/strong> features<\/a> that add special functionality required by some deployments.\u00a0 Both the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em><\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span> models allow adding more Base Stations, aka data streams (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/add-on-stream-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">add-on streams<\/a>, commonly called &#8220;slots&#8221;) to expand the size of the Caster network.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> has earned the dominant share of the worlds NTRIP Caster market for a good reason:\u00a0 it is a solid product which provides much more than the core functionality of an NTRIP Caster at a moderate cost.\u00a0 Each of the three models is targeted to address the needs of a different segment of the NTRIP Caster marketplace.\u00a0 Learn more below (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/feature-matrix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 The various features are unlocked depending on the license key you provide when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/how-to-register-snip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">registering<\/a>, there is no need to install new software when upgrading from one model to another.<\/p>\n<h3>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Lite<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 Model<\/h3>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Lite<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model is intended to provide most everything any small NTRIP network would need.\u00a0 And it is free for both personal and commercial use.\u00a0 It is limited to no more than <strong>three Base Stations<\/strong>.\u00a0 The number of connected users (or user accounts) is not limited, you can add thousands if you wish.\u00a0\u00a0 It fully supports NTRIP Rev1 but not Rev2.\u00a0 It displays limited bit level decodes of the actual RTCM message content, (while other models show full decodes).\u00a0 It does not provide various IP blocking logic methods used with repeating bad connections.\u00a0 It has much fewer graphical reports and displays of users and bases, but essential Google map support is provided. [These limitations are only present in <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Lite<\/em><\/strong><\/span>, any <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>or better model does not have them.]<\/p>\n<h3>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Basic<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 Model<\/h3>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic <\/em><\/strong><\/span>model is intended to provide for the needs of small NTRIP networks, typically used by a local Ag cooperative or a smaller survey business.\u00a0\u00a0 It ships with a limitation of <strong>eight Base Stations<\/strong>, but additional base stations can be added to it at any time (simply purchase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/add-on-stream-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional slots<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As with all models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>, you can have as many user accounts and connections as you wish.\u00a0 This model unlocks all restrictions found in the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Lite<\/em><\/strong><\/span> model, including full support for Rev2 NTRIP and full bit level decoding of the RTCM messages.\u00a0 The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic <\/em><\/strong><\/span>model provides various IP block and ban logic controls to automatically manage bad internet connections.\u00a0 The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model also allows operating a RTCM style <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/nearest-streams-tab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEAR Stream<\/a>, a popular type of network RTK data where your rover devices connect to a single mountPt and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> then determines which Base Station is best suited for their individual needs\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model also allows the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/introducing-pfat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>PFAT&#x2122;<\/strong><\/span> services<\/a> to manipulate the data stream content in various ways.\u00a0 The <strong>PFAT<\/strong> ability to move coordinate systems and frames of reference used by a given Base Station is often a key need in a deployment.\u00a0 Using <strong>PFAT<\/strong> to duplicate a data stream is also very popular in regions when two different data are required to be used.<\/p>\n<p>Many deployments start with <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>then upgrade to a <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model as their needs grow.\u00a0 We offer a generous trade-in for <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>to <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>upgrades; fully crediting your prior investment in both <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> and any additional slot licenses toward the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span> purchase.<\/p>\n<h3>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 Model<\/h3>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro <\/em><\/strong><\/span>model is intended to provide for the needs of moderate to larger NTRIP networks, typically used by organizations with larger networks for in-house use or by firms reselling NTRIP services to others. \u00a0 It ships with a limitation of <strong>thirty Base Stations<\/strong>, but additional base stations can be added to it at any time (simply purchase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/add-on-stream-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional slots<\/a>).\u00a0 It is not uncommon for a <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span> deployment to have additional slot licenses supporting several hundred Base Stations.<\/p>\n<p>As with all models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>, you can have as many user accounts and connections as you wish.\u00a0 This model unlocks the few restrictions found in the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic <\/em><\/strong><\/span>model, including adding <strong>NEAR<\/strong> support for message content types beyond just RTCM-3.x.\u00a0 In <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span>, five separate <strong>NEAR<\/strong> streams are allowed, and this number increases as more slots are added to the machine.\u00a0 Management of IP blocking logic allows additional manual control over that found in the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em><\/strong><\/span> model.\u00a0 A simple AVL server is also added, allowing the operator to aggregate and\u00a0 send NMEA $GGA messages\u00a0 from NTRIP Clients to subscribed listeners (used to plot client movements for fleet tracking).\u00a0 Charts and plots of various run time values are extended to cover the prior 3 years of Caster operation.<\/p>\n<p>And, only the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>model can use the features provided by Plug-In modules (see below).<\/p>\n<h3>The <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span> Model with <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Plug-Ins<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/plug-ins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plug-In<\/a> system provide additional useful functionally not required by all deployments.\u00a0 Plug-In modules can be added to the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Pro<\/em><\/strong><\/span> model of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> (not the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Basic<\/em><\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Lite<\/em><\/strong><\/span> models).\u00a0 Unlike the one-time only payment used for licensed models of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> or for additional Slots, Plug-In licenses also have a reoccurring annual cost, typically 15% of the acquisition cost.\u00a0 This fee covers various ongoing costs to provide the Plug-In services and offsets the costs of further development.<\/p>\n<p>Typically a Plug-In is purchased for an annual period of time, but most Plug-Ins also have a <em>month-by-month<\/em> version that is intended to allow interested parties to try out the Plug-In before committing to an annual purchase.\u00a0 See the individual Plugs-Ins for detail.<\/p>\n<p>Plug-Ins are generally of interest to those running <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> as a commercial NTRIP Caster with paying clients\/customers.\u00a0 The various Plug-Ins aid in the process of customer contact and account management.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular Plug-Ins for these deployments are as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/back-up-settings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automatic BackUp<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Used to automate the process of daily backups. This process can be done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/back-up-settings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manually<\/a> on any model of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 With this Plug-In the process is fully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/auto-back-up-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automated<\/a> and occurs at the interval you set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/sending-email-from-snip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Automatic eMail<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Adding eMail to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> is a great feature to send out various reports and charts to both the Caster operator and to various customers and\/or users.\u00a0 This is of particular value when there is no local printer on the host machine, such as with a VM (virtual machine) when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/setting-ips-for-aws-deployments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AWS<\/a> is being used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: left;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/user-accounts-vs-customer-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enhanced User Managements (EUM)<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0 The Enhanced User Managements Plug-In allows adding all sorts of usage restrictions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/user-accounts-adding-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">User Accounts<\/a>, as well as adding and managing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/user-accounts-vs-customer-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Customer Accounts<\/a>.\u00a0 This is how you automatically disable a non-paying user at a predetermined point in time.\u00a0\u00a0 This is how you control which user accounts can connect to which Base stations.\u00a0 This Plug-In provides the logical binding between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/kb\/knowledge-base\/question-what-is-an-ntrip-client\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NTRIP Client<\/a> device(s) and the business entity that is associated with it, your customer.\u00a0 If you are running a commercial network with paying customer accounts, you will want the EUM Plug-In.\u00a0 If you also have the Automatic eMail Plug-In you can send various eMails to your customers as their account details change, lease periods come up for renewal, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Client Web API Interface\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong> The Web API allows you to access the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>SNIP<\/strong><\/span> Caster by way of any browser to get detailed reports and to manage various user and base station accounts.\u00a0 With this Plug-In your technical support team can access key Caster details without being logged on to the host machine itself (typically with Microsoft Remote Desktop or with TeamViewer).\u00a0 You can set up accounts to have read-only access or read-write access, limiting those who have management level access to the Caster.\u00a0\u00a0 You can also set up this access for selected customer accounts, limiting what they can see\/change\/edit\/etc. to the user accounts and base stations you have preset.\u00a0 Use this Plug-In to manage your Caster with a cell phone from the field.<\/p>\n<p>If you are developing or supporting products in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) space, then our SAE J2735 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/downloads\/sae-dsrc-j2735-v2x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DSRC support Plug-In<\/a> will be of great interest to you.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to operate multiple Casters for different users, or to resell time on your Caster to your clients as a &#8220;white label&#8221; product; then our upcoming multiple-Caster \/ virtual Caster Plug-in will be of great interest to you.\u00a0 When combined with the <em>Client Web API Interface<\/em>, this will allow your customers to see and interact only their own Bases and Users (NTRIP Client devices), while you centrally manage your customer base.\u00a0 Targeted for release in Q3 of this year.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Configurations<\/h3>\n<p>As a general rule, our firm is in the business of <em>selling<\/em> NTRIP Casters, not the business of <em>operating<\/em> them in competition with our customers.\u00a0 We will provide managed hosting of your bases or caster by request (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.use-snip.com\/caster-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this page<\/a> for further details) but is is generally more cost effective to self-host your Caster or to use one of the popular VM systems to place it in the cloud.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding More Slots<\/h3>\n<p>As the number of connected base stations in a Caster grows, it is common to purchase additional &#8220;slots&#8221;
